Built in 1887, the historic Strater Hotel is one of Durango's prominent downtown landmarks and is located two blocks north of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in the center of town. A Cleveland pharmacist named Henry Strater believed Durango would prosper and therefore need a grand hotel. He opened the Strater after an expenditure of $70,000, and as it evolved it became a popular retreat for townfolk who would move in during the cold winter months. The Strater is home to the world’s largest collection of American Victorian Antiques which decorate many of its 93 guestrooms. Many of the rooms are specially dedicated to people who impacted the hotel and the area including Louie L’Amour (Room 222) which is a designated Literary Landmark. The Strater is home to the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville, Henry Strater Theatre, The Office Spiritorium, Diamond Belle Saloon, Mahogany Grille, and Strater Catering & Events.
